RIDING SAWMILL, SCOTLAND: Portal crane

New system at Ridings Sawmills (Cardross)

Baljer Zembrod delivers a portal crane to Scotland.

Family-owned Ridings Sawmills in Cardross, Scotland, has modernised its existing log yard and built a new 20-box section-sorting system.

Baljer & Zembrod supplied an integrated butt end reducer and portal crane. This rail-mounted crane is used to empty the sorting boxes, stack up the sorted logs and feed the sawmill, replacing a diesel-powered excavator. Assembly of the sorting line and commissioning of the portal crane were successfully completed at the beginning of 2016.

In the two years prior to the new construction, the concept for this new log yard was developed during several planning rounds that included numerous discussions with the customer. Frank Riding, owner and managing director, summed up the project as follows: ‘The collaboration between the Riding family, Holtec and Baljer & Zembrod has resulted in a reliable and cost-effective solution’.
